Holding Public Agencies Responsible
The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Act and Management Plan require state agencies to adopt an air-quality strategy. Since the passage of the Act, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has been neglectful in taking any serious steps to address the problem of air pollution in the Gorge. As a result, visibility continues to worsen and large industries continue to pollute at dangerous levels. Friends is working hard to ensure that the Department of Environmental Quality, the primary agency responsible for protecting and enhancing Oregon's air quality, adopts and begins implementation of a Gorge air quality and visibility strategy that contains the following elements.
• Protects and enhances air quality and visibility.
• Addresses all major sources of air pollution, both within and outside of the Gorge.
• An effective combination of regulatory and voluntary measures.
• Specific timetables for implementation.
• Measurable and timely goals for air pollution reduction.
