Friends uses a variety of tools to ensure long-term protection of scenic, natural, cultural, and recreation resources in the Columbia Gorge.

Friends of the Columbia Gorge Land Trust: Our Land Trust was established in 2005, identifying key priority landscapes for protection.

Our first purchase in 2006 at Cape Horn will allow public access to spectacular views from a cliff-top trail.

Supporting Public Land Acquisition: Friends works diligently to support public purchase of critical Gorge landscapes from willing sellers.

Proposed Gorge Casino: Friends opposes the creation of 603,000-square-foot casino development in the heart of the Columbia Gorge.

Columbia Gorge-Mt.Hood Wilderness Proposal: Friends is actively working with a coalition of organizations to promote protection of the remaining forests and wildlands around Mt. Hood and in the Columbia Gorge.

Proposed Destination Resort: The Columbia River Gorge Commission is currently deciding if they will change the Gorge-wide management plan to allow a 250-unit destination resort in the National Scenic Area.  Friends is actively opposing this proposal.

Preventing Sprawl: The City of The Dalles wants to expand its Urban Growth Boundary (UGB), a legal boundary that separates urban land from rural land.   Expanding the UGB would mean that urban scale development could encroach into land that is now protected by the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area Act.
