Hike Info & Guidelines
General information
- Most of Friends' hikes are offered free to the public; pre-hike registration is not required unless indicated. For Members Only outings, non-members are welcome to join at the time of registration.
- Children under age 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Participants accept responsibility for their own safety. Please stay on trails to protect plants and soils and to reduce contact with poison oak and ticks.
- Most hikes involve most of the day, with hikers returning to the Portland area around 4:00 pm, although this can vary. If you have any time constraints, be sure to check with our office or the hike leader before leaving for the hike.
-
All hike distances noted are round-trip on the trail, but do not include driving distance.
-
“Meeting Place” directions assume travel from the Portland metro area on I-84 eastbound unless otherwise noted. For directions from points east, e-mail or call for further information.
-
Hike participants must be in good physical condition as all hikes are somewhat strenuous. Be prepared for changes in weather; hikes are not canceled because of rain. Weather is often drier east of Hood River.

This transit parking lot is on NE 99th Ave. between Pacific St. and the I-84 exit ramp. Reach Gateway from I-84 Exit 7 (Halsey Street); take an immediate right on NE 99th Ave; enter south end of parking structure nearest the MAX station. From I-205 take Exit 21A (Glisan Street); go east to NE 99th, turn left and proceed past Pacific St. stop sign to the parking garage. Friends' hikes meet in the south-southeast area on the ground floor.

After exiting I-84 from east or west, turn south and drive along the Sandy River approximately 1/4 mile to the Lewis and Clark State Park lot on the left. The hiking group will meet at the south end of the parking lot.
